Jewel Weed Blossoms

These are spotted jewelweed blossoms.

They have a trumpet shape and rich coloring, making them most intriguing!

These blossoms are little beauties, but I also liked the way the droplets of rain formed beads upon the leaves.

Below is the yellow form of jewelweed, which is a little more rare.

You are most likely to find jewelweed along creeks and streams.  They like to keep their roots wet.  They are also often found in the same neighborhood as stinging nettle.  Jewelweed is said to be a good antidote for the sting of the nettle, and for poison ivy and insect bites.  But if all else fails, they are still simply beautiful to look at.

Butterfly Milkweed

Today's picture is of butterfly milkweed.  This is a native plant with an appealing bright orange color.

Butterfly milkweed attracts not only butterflies, including Monarchs, but bees, wasps, beetles, and hummingbirds as well.

Contrary to its name, this particular variety of milkweed does not have a milky sap.  Common names for it include Canada root, chigger flower, and pleurisy root (due to its healing propensities).  It's scientific name is Asclepias tuberosa.  This comes from the the name of the Greek god of healing, and tuberosa, meaning swollen, knobby or tuberous.

Family on the Trail

We had a recent visit from my sister and her husband.  The majority of our family members live far away, so we made the most of their short time with us.

One event was a must.  We had to get out and see the trail that Jason worked on for his Eagle project.  It was a living "show and tell".

On the way to the trailhead, we got to see some pleasure boats lock through.

We also enjoyed the colors along the way as we walked and talked.  Below are photos of the beauties we enjoyed, taken by my son, Jason.
