My family actually has a lot of combined knowledge on birding, and so in this post, I am going to share some tips for identifying the differences between pigeons and woodpeckers.
These pointers come from the collective wisdom of my husband and kids, and should be helpful for the novice birder in the field.
Diagnostic Differences of Pigeons & Woodpeckers:
1. Duh! One is a pigeon, and one is a woodpecker.

2. Woodpecker has a double vowel; pigeon doesn't.
3. Pigeons want to drive the bus.*

4. Woodpeckers either don't want to drive the bus, or they lack the compositional skill to write about this desire. (Some studies suggests woodpeckers can write - they just have trouble finding publishers. Further research must be conducted.)
