Purple Prairie Clover

This is purple prairie clover.

It isn't really a clover, but it is native to Iowa.

As a native tall grass prairie plant, it is no surprise that this plant has a long taproot.  This feature has helped it to survive periodic drought conditions over hundreds of years.

It is a food source for antelope, as well as many other creatures of the prairie, but I just love it for its beautiful color.  These photos remind me that such glowing, vibrant blossoms will again meet the eye in a few months time!
